Maternity leave Baja por Maternidad

[ENGLISH] I am on leave, I am one of those lucky ones that in Australia gets paid maternity leave, and I get my full salary too. For 6 months, all I need to do is take care of the little dude. However, I have decided to spread my leave for as long as I can and I will return to work in November but only three days a week, the other two are part of my leave. With this, I can slowly get into work while making sure that I know what I am doing with my two sons

I am trying to make the most out of my leave, putting order in wardrobes and doing stuff that I know that I would never do unless I am stuck at home with a couple of hours to use in between feeds. I have also started checking my work e-mail every couple of days. I am in touch with research students as I feel that I cannot just disappear from their research project. And there are a few colleagues (male of course) that think that I am ready just to come in and have a short meeting…. Well… no, the answer is no, time is too short in between feeds at the moment and I couldn’t really focus as I should.

This brings me to the next topic that is the necessity of maternity leave. I happen to have recovered from the birth beautifully, and R is a good baby so I can adjust fairly well. The other day someone told me that I was proof that women don’t really need 6 months to recover from child birth, that we should just keep on going how it had been done all through history with women going back to their work (in the farm or whatever) straight after birth. Can we really do that? Well, yes and no. In those times people lived in real villages where the entire village would help raising every child; also, women would go back to work (and take the child with them) but I am guessing that nobody was expecting that they would have the same or better productivity than before the child. In my case: (1) I have wonderful friends that are willing to help but I cannot rely on them to care for my sons 8 hours a day, 5 days a week; (2) in fact, I need to arrange childcare which in Sydney is very expensive (over $100 a day for a baby) and hard to get (I have put R’s down in 7 centres… let’s see if we get a spot somewhere); and, (3) my employers expect me to be as productive (or more) as before I had this baby (hopefully utter exhaustion will enhance my creativity). So, yes, I need the leave, I cannot take the baby with me and casually breastfeed him while I deliver a lecture, I don’t think it would be wrong, I just think that society is no longer ready for that… and it would be really distracting for me… what if he falls sleep while he feeds as he often does? Do I just ignore him or interrupt the lecture to wake him up? And do I get him to burp in between lecture topics?

Paid maternity leave does not make me want to have more babies; it just makes it easier for me to take my time to get organised so I can return to work while I care for a very young citizen.

*Please note that I am talking here of maternity leave, because I think that the mothers need a time to recover from labour and to adjust to feeding etc. I do think that fathers also need leave so they can adjust to their babies but that will be the topic of another post.

[ENGLISH] 132 days of Bell’s Palsy. Here are some photos showing areas of improvement in my face. My mouth is the most recovered by far. I can do a small smile that looks almost normal... my big smile is still loop-sided. My eye has a lot more movement, I can close it almost completely all the time and I can (sort of) squint it; even the lower side of my eye has some movement now. My eyebrow and nose still remain quite static. It is amazing the number of people that have commented on how the wrinkles in my face are going to be uneven, and how smooth my left side will be. They say that as if it were some kind of advantage from having Bell's Palsy. I appreciate the good intention behind those comments, but... seriously? I cannot smile or close my eyes, do you think I care about wrinkles right now?! If that means that I am recovered, bring those wrinkles on!!

A family of 4 - Una familia de 4

Mum and R - Mama y R
[ENGLISH] My mother stayed with us for 5 weeks, which included the first 3 weeks of R’s life. That was brilliant, even though she thinks that she wasn’t helping much, she really was. For 5 entire weeks our washing was magically done and clean folded clothes would appear on our bed in the end of every day. I had a companion to go to places every day and it was great having her here and sharing these very special days with her. I loved every moment and I really thank her for that. While my mother was here, it all seemed like a holiday to me but now that she is gone, reality is sinking in and… we are now a family of four.

I am breast feeding R, therefore a considerable percentage of my time is gone while feeding. Therefore B ends up doing most of the work with G. On top of that we have all of the rest of the home stuff to be done, washing, cleaning, and tiding up… I am on maternity leave so I try to do as much as I can, but there is no way that I can get everything done, and so B really needs to work hard when he arrives back from work. I am also trying to get G to do the same as we used to do before R’s arrival. For example, I still try to take him to the skate park a few afternoons every week (I am that odd mother that is breastfeeding a newborn in the skate park ha, ha, ha). Everything is good but tiring, today I even managed to get my cooking mojo back and made some spaghettini with mussels cooked in white wine; it was delicious!

Some things that I need to do:
  1. New Australian passports for R and for me
  2. Register R in the Spanish consulate. New Spanish passport for R
  3. I need to check my work e-mail… I haven’t looked at it in days and am dreading doing so.
  4. Go to the doctor to get my BP checked and request a referral for a physiotherapist
  5. Book tickets to Spain… we (the boys and I) are going in September!
  6. Organise and clean up my clothes… I am back to my pre-pregnancy body (with breastfeeding capability) and need appropriate clothes.
  7. Massage my face more often with the Hypericum oil.
  8. Find my brain… or at least some blood to send to it so it starts making some sense…
  9. .. ??

Hacerle pasaporte español a R.
  9. …??

4 months of Bell's Palsy - 4 meses de Parálisis de Bell

[ENGLISH] Today it is 4 months since the onset of Bell’s Palsy. I really cannot believe that so much time has passed, so many things have happened (R is two weeks old!) and I am still with Bell’s Palsy. I am better, YES, I can finally feel that I am improving but the improvements are very slow. I can now move my mouth quite a bit but it still doesn’t seal around the glass/cup when I drink, I cannot rinse my mouth after brushing without spilling and my smile is pretty loop sided. I am starting to be able of moving my eye and eyebrow, only slightly. And, my nose is not moving but I can feel something. Not everything is good news though, my mouth sometimes seems to get stuck into “pulling mode” and that gives me a bit of a joker aspect. There seems to be a bit of synkinesis, my mouth pulls when I am trying to move my eyebrows. It is definitely time to go back to the doctor to seek their opinion and try to get a referral for a physiotherapist. I have found one who works for Sydney University and her research specialty is recovery of facial paralysis.

Finally!! - Finalmente!!

[ENGLISH] R was born on the 29th of July at 7:44pm. He is a lovely and healthy boy who weighed 3.730 kg at birth and measured 55 cm! Labour was long and tiring and we found out that my body just does not dilate; so, as it happened with G, 24hours after inserting the gel, and while having strong painful contractions, my cervix was only 3 cm dilated and posterior. Therefore, I got connected to a drip of hormones and got an epidural at 4pm. That allowed me to rest and get my energy back to do the pushing.

R was gently pushed and breathed into the world and arrived with a powerful scream. All good, nice strong boy who was searching for my breast soon after arriving at this world. Over the moon and amazing bonding moments. I did not care anymore about anything as I had my healthy boy.
