Back to "normal" - De vuelta a la "normalidad"

R + G
[ENGLISH] Well, R is now 4 months old and life seems to be going back to normal. I am now back to work two days a week… those two days are somehow flexible and imply a lot of work. Catching up has been insane but 1 month later I feel like I am starting to be up to date in almost everything. I am trying to take it easy and stick to my two days but it is hard when everyone around you works 5 days.

R and G are wonderful, G has been the best boy in the world lately, with really nice behaviour and manners… still a 4.5 years old boy though. A lot of fun. R has been going through the dreaded “4 month sleepregression” or the 4th leap of the Wonder Weeks, also known as the leap of week 19. His sleep has been shocking, with some nights waking up every couple of hours but I think that it is slowly going back to his normal sleep-through-the-night being. I have my fingers, my toes and my ears crossed! He is a happy little bubba otherwise, smiley and content. I truly am a lucky woman.

My face is still Picassian, left eye a lot smaller
My face did not get the memo about going back to normal and it is still quite Picassian. It is almost unnoticeable when I am not moving my face but as soon as I smile, chew, or move, then it is obvious that there is a significant lack of symmetry. I will do a Bell’s Palsy post on the 8 month mark.

I am cooking with the Thermomix like crazy and I must say that I am really enjoying it. I made Banana Bread following a lovely recipefrom Retro Mummy, and, yogurt sponge cake, and beef stew following recipes from official Thermomix books. I enjoy cooking with it as, for now, it really feels like I am experimenting. But what I enjoy the most is having no pots to wash afterwards.

Best Banana Bread I have made - El mejor Pan de Plátano

[ENGLISH] So after the warmest and driest weeks ever we are now in the middle of some serious rain. I was imagining the almost 20 people we had over for R’s baptism beautifully spread between our tiny living room and our patio… but no, it was pouring down so we had to be inside. It worked well and we had a really good time.

Tarta de chocolate fondantWhy did we baptise R if we aren’t practising Catholics? I take religion as something that gives us a set of guidelines about how to be good persons and how to live as part of a community. In that sense, Catholic traditions are my traditions and I want them to be my sons’ traditions as well.
For the catering I did a thermosaturday… I cooked and cooked and cooked until I thought that the Thermomix was going to pack her stuff and go back to Spain. For starting we had Salmorejo, Quiche Lorraine and Chicken and Chorizo Risotto. For sweet, we had Tarta de Santiago, Chocolate Cake and Croissants (only thing I did not make) with Mango Confiture. We also had cheese boards, olives and lollies. Everything was really good, and I think that I am now refining the Chicken and Chorizo risotto recipe enough to share. I will write it down next time I make it. The chocolate Cake from Velocidad Cuchara was a success with nothing left over. Tasty and easy, it is really perfect!

We were delighted to have our friends and family over and I think that everyone had a great time; I would have liked to invite more people but we simply would not have fitted. Sometimes I really wish that my house was bigger so I could have people over all the time.

Face movements after 7 months of BP
My left eye is smaller now
Mi ojo izquierdo es más pequeño
[ENGLISH] Time flies. I cannot believe that 7 months have passed already. I cannot believe either that it has only been 7 months. I think that I am still improving. Synkinesis are strong and annoying. My left eye, which stayed opened for months, now tends to close with every movement. As a fellow sufferer from our Bell’s Palsy Survivors Facebook Group (thank you Frances!) accurately described it, I now look like Popeye. So I don’t dribble anymore or need to hold my mouth for drinking but now I wink my left eye… I chew with my left eye closed! Synkinesis is a funny thing, not only triggers my eye closure but also makes me smile when I don’t mean it and worse than that, makes me “salivate” through my left nostril and my left eye. So if something is really good and I really enjoy it, I end up with a runny nose and a teary eye.

I am happy that I am recovering function and the Popeye look is just annoying; it just sounds like a bit of a joke that for some time my first wish was being able of closing my eye and now I wish I could keep it open. “Take care with what you wish” Let’s say that I am not looking forward to all that eating in public during Christmas celebrations…

Signs of recovery: this is how it is happening for me summarised in a few points:

  • I have pain behind my affected ear once in a while. Dull pain, nothing sharp. The first times it happened I was frightened to think that BP was about to get worse.
  • I suddenly start feeling a lot of tingling in parts of my face; it feels like if I could move those parts but when I look in the mirror, they don’t move, they just tingle.
  • Then, one day, I realise that I can move that part, a very tiny amount. My skin feels like it stretches to the limit with every tiny movement.
  • Movement capacity in that area improves daily. But only one muscle at a time.

Look at any diagram showing all the muscles in the face. I can say that one of the muscles that pull my mouth is almost healed but my mouth’s orbicular muscle is still a long way from recovery.

Synkinesis, small left eye and no recovery of mouth's orbicular muscle
Orbicular not recovered with small left eye
