Mum is coming – Llega mi madre

39 semanas
39 weeks
[ENGLISH] My mother is arriving tomorrow! I am really looking forward; it is not only that she will be here for #2’s birth which is really important. Also, she has been fighting with depression for the last couple of years and the fact that she is coming on her own just shows how much of an effort she is doing and how much better she is. I am over the moon.

#2 is preparing to come up, I have had contractions since Friday and strong, real ones, since Sunday. In fact, contractions were so strong on Sunday morning that I thought that #2 would be born then. He has now come to his senses and is waiting for Lala; either that or he wants to arrive at the same time what would make things interesting… Contractions come and go now without being as strong as Sunday morning.

BP… still improving! I will hopefully be able of showing half a wonky smile to #2 to welcome him into the world :)

Three months of Bell’s Palsy – Tres meses con Parálisis de Bell

Some movement but not that much
Algo de movimiento pero no demasiado
[ENGLISH] Three months yesterday and I am only starting to see some visible signs of improvement. There has been improvement before; I have not needed to tape my eye close for sleeping for the last month. BUT it has only been in the last week that some slight movement has returned to my face. Here is a list of what I have been doing lately that seems to be working:

  1.  Rest without rising stress levels. That means that I do enough things at work to get things off my to-do list but I take things easy avoiding stress.
  2. Vitamin B. I was first on weeklyinjections of Vitamin B complex forte and since finishing them last week, I have been taking one daily tablet of Blackmores Mega B.
  3. Three times a day I take the herbalmagistral formulae that Jill prepared for me. I don’t have all the ingredients and I am sure that they would be personalised for each patient but the main ingredients were Oats, Rosehip, Skullcap, Mitchella and Potassium Phosphates.
  4. As many times as I remember per day, I massage the affected area with Hypericum oil, very gently. Jill recommended at least 3 times a day… sometimes I do it 5 times and sometimes 1 but I try to do it as often as possible. I feel that the massages are really important for the recovery.
  5. I have had two Reiki sessions; I first was able of moving the corner of my mouth after the first Reiki session.
  6. Finally, my weekly Yoga class has been excellent to keep my strength and relaxing. I always felt my face tingling after the class.

I also did lots of acupuncture for starting and I think that helped… it was however very expensive and I felt like there was not enough improvement to justify the money spent.

My face is looking more symmetric

[ENGLISH] What does an academic do on the Friday night that marks her 39th week of pregnancy? I don’t know about other but I know what I have been doing until now 1am. I have had lots of contractions today so I have freaked out that I was going to go into labour (contractions seem to have stopped now) and have decided to finish off with work stuff:

1.       I have read abstract and conclusions plus re-reading the final chapter of one of my PhD students who will be submitting while I am away. I am a hands-on supervisor and he has been (is) a great student, I don’t want him to be disadvantaged because I am having a baby so I have been working hard (so has he) getting all his material reviewed. DONE- he has done a great job!
2.       I have accepted to organise a major international conference in Sydney in 2016… I have drafted a few emails to keep things moving with securing a venue while I am away. DONE!
3.       I also am, in my (non-existent) spare time Director of a small research station and I have been reviewing the new boating guidelines that include risk assessments for each boat, boat trip forms that have to be filled on a daily basis etc… painful but necessary. DONE! Forms are ready and I have sent them for endorsement to several of my colleagues and organised follow up and implementation. By the way, if you have a permit to work in Australia and hold a Master 5 or a Coxswain license endorsed for the southern Great Barrier Reef let me know… we need to hire boat managers for the research station.
4.       I have also been answering other queries and e-mails and am now going to bed.

The academic life is awesome, very vocational. But it is also very demanding when you need to take leave as nobody really replaces you while you are away.

BP update: I had more Reiki today… I think things continue to improve slowly.

One of us – Uno de nosotros

Main switch board outside
Cuadro eléctrico

[ENGLISH] Still no hot water here… electrician will be coming tomorrow to try to check it. The main switch board is definitely a scary place with ceramic fuses… we are not touching them! It also stopped raining today and I could recover the clothes from the line; the sheets were miraculously dry!

Today I was requested to write a small contribution about what being a women in science means on a daily basis, I sent them information on a few of the comments that I have had to deal with over the last few years. I am sharing one with you. When a male colleague wishes to compliment me, they say things such as: “Don’t worry about her, she is one of us, one of the boys!”. Well, not really! I am a woman and pretty happy to be one, why cannot they accept that I am fine and “one of them” but still a woman?! I don’t want to be a man! Needless to say that not once, one of my male colleagues has been praised by calling him a woman!

On the BP side of things… improvements are still coming, I can move more obviously the corner of my mouth and it now can be seen a bit better than yesterday (this has been confirmed by B who refuses to lie to me, thanks <3)… hopefully tomorrow will be better again. Given that I have finished with the Vitamin B injections, I have bought some Blackmores Mega B to keep on having Vitamin B supplements. Feeling positive :)
