MEDITATION – MEDITACIÓN

R relaxes by sleeping in weird positions -
R se relaja durmiendo todo retorcido
[ENGLISH] Over the last 6 weeks I have been doing a meditation course. The instructor has been taking us through different meditation techniques. She said that some techniques work better for some people so she would teach us a range and then we can practise those that are better for us.

I like counting, I have spent my life counting stuff, cars on my way to work, tiles in the bathroom, steps when I walk on the beach and breaths when I go for a run. My father does it too, and no, he did not teach me so it must be genetic. My mother was quite amused when she found out that I was a “counter” like dad. It turns out that counting is meditating, you empty your brain and go into relaxation, you can achieve deep relaxation by counting. It was the first technique that we learnt and the one that has worked the best with me.

I am a scientist. I can understand the reasons behind relaxation through counting, you sort of empty your brain. I can understand how you undertake relaxation techniques that “travel through your body”, it is about awareness, focusing in what you are feeling through that part of the body. My problems start when meditators speak like if it was some kind of religion. My instructor even said that science has proven that we can change our environment with our attitude; she insinuated that we can change the climate. I cringe; this is the same people that would be outraged if their children were taught creationism in school! (creationism, by the way, is absolutely ridiculous!) Don’t they realise that what they are saying is as wrong? We can change our attitude and we can modify other people’s attitudes to us but we cannot change our physical environment!

While I utterly enjoyed the meditation, I felt quite uncomfortable with some of the stuff what was said in the classes. Even more uncomfortable when the instructor was claiming that science had proven one thing or the other. Well, if it hasn’t been peer-reviewed by reputable peers, it is not science. And using Google and reading blogs is not scientific research.

Relaxing at the beach - Relax en la playa

A mí me gusta contar.

Back at work 1 - De vuelta al trabajo 1

[ENGLISH] today (yesterday) was my first day on campus. After a few days of starting to deal with the almost 2000 emails accumulated in my inbox, and a quick couple of meetings that I attended with R, today, for the first time, I left my 3 months old son for a few hours with a “nanny” and went into work. Now, I think that the information provided in this short paragraph deserves further analysis. Namely: (1) almost 2000 e-mails; (2) attending meetings with R; (3) a “nanny”; and, (4) how to keep on breastfeeding while you are back at work (there is a clue in one of the photos)… watch the next few posts coming, today I will only speak about e-mail while on leave.

*My lovely nanny is a good friend who is studying so it is good for her and good for me.

My inbox right now - Mi bandeja de entrada
ALMOST 2000 EMAILS:  is it really leave if your work is being piled up for you while you are away? is it expected that I should deal with every old email or should I just delete them and start from scratch? There are several categories (1) those sent not knowing that I was on leave, I assume some of them will resend their email sometime once they learn that I am back; (2) those sent for my information, someone was dealing with it but cc’ed me so I knew, they will not send that info again and they expect me to read it; (3) those send by someone who knows I am on leave and yet they still send it so I read it on my own time when I return; (4) mass emails and automated announcements; and, (5) spam, bogus conference and journals appreciating my knowledge in [please insert here something totally unrelated to my research]

What to do? I want to delete them but I guess that I will just scan the subjects, open a few and then leave all the unopened e-mails in my inbox… the truth is that this problem also occurs after having been on recreational or any kind of leave…

Should employees have the right to turn their e-mail off while they are on leave? I think so!

The cause of my email trouble

[ENGLISH] What does an academic do on the Friday night that marks her 39th week of pregnancy? I don’t know about other but I know what I have been doing until now 1am. I have had lots of contractions today so I have freaked out that I was going to go into labour (contractions seem to have stopped now) and have decided to finish off with work stuff:

1.       I have read abstract and conclusions plus re-reading the final chapter of one of my PhD students who will be submitting while I am away. I am a hands-on supervisor and he has been (is) a great student, I don’t want him to be disadvantaged because I am having a baby so I have been working hard (so has he) getting all his material reviewed. DONE- he has done a great job!
2.       I have accepted to organise a major international conference in Sydney in 2016… I have drafted a few emails to keep things moving with securing a venue while I am away. DONE!
3.       I also am, in my (non-existent) spare time Director of a small research station and I have been reviewing the new boating guidelines that include risk assessments for each boat, boat trip forms that have to be filled on a daily basis etc… painful but necessary. DONE! Forms are ready and I have sent them for endorsement to several of my colleagues and organised follow up and implementation. By the way, if you have a permit to work in Australia and hold a Master 5 or a Coxswain license endorsed for the southern Great Barrier Reef let me know… we need to hire boat managers for the research station.
4.       I have also been answering other queries and e-mails and am now going to bed.

The academic life is awesome, very vocational. But it is also very demanding when you need to take leave as nobody really replaces you while you are away.

BP update: I had more Reiki today… I think things continue to improve slowly.
