Welcome 2014 – Bienvenido 2014

Family photo in Manly
[ENGLISH] I have been full-time mothering, this is why I have been away. Lots of work before going on holidays and then lots of things to do with the kids.

I am happy to see 2013 go. 2013 has been hard, really hard. I have seen people very close to me battle with depression and not always win. But I guess that the important thing is that they have been trying to get out and are in the path of recovery. My face went all wonky in April and has not recovered yet (I am yet to post the update on my Bell’s Palsy). And I also had a cancer scare with my mother. Lots of other ugly things happened to my good friends: one was in hospital with Purpura and another in hospital with cancer, another lost his mother, another did not get her permanent position, and my cousin divorced in a rather ugly way… and so on…

Two sons
My normal year ended in April as I have been unable to function normally afterwards. My face was painful and debilitating and as a result I took 1 month of sick leave. Thankfully my pregnancy went well and R was born on the 29th of July. And what a delight that has been! R is the sweetest and loveliest and cuddliest little boy. He is kind and gentle and has compensated everything else. What would have been a horrible year to forget has become a year to remember. Seeing my two kids grow and interact and play with their father has been what has kept me going this year.

I hope that 2014 is better, I want health and happiness and rest… and peace of mind… but I am starting to think that this is what growing up is about. Maybe this is what grown-ups were warning me when I wanted to grow up faster.

Happy new year to every one! May 2014 be great for all of us <3 <3 <3

G on his bike
[ESPAÑOL] He estado ocupada.

A small win – Un pequeño triunfo

G
[ENGLISH] I always wanted to have daughters so I could help them to becoming strong women. I thought that educating a girl was a challenge that I was qualified to take.  However, I have two boys and my challenge is now to educate them so they grow up respecting women and acknowledging equality as something normal. I think that this challenge is harder as it is too easy to perpetuate stereotypes. I am lucky to have a wonderful husband, and partner, and friend who shares this view and instead of helping me with the house and rising the children, he does his 50%. He is as outraged as me when we see toys catalogues that speak of the “Little professor” showing science gadgets on the boy’s section of the toys (and with only pictures of boys), while the girl’s section has plenty of ironing boards, washing machines, etc.

Yesterday G was talking about how he was going to do something (I don’t remember exactly what) where he is was going to get very dirty. I turned to him and asked “so are you going to wash your clothes afterwards”, and he said “NO” with a very cheeky smile. So I asked “Who is going to wash your clothes for you?”…. for a few seconds, I waited in fear of him answering “mummy” but no! I am proud to say that he used both hands to point at B and myself and he said “Mummy and Daddy!!” I was so proud that I kissed him.

A small win, indeed.

Laundry for everyone (including superheros)

[ENGLISH] And it rained, and it rained and then, it rained some more. I really don’t know if it will be necessary to drive to the swimming pool for G’s swimming lesson tomorrow... it might be possible for him to swim in the driveway!

G has been going to childcare since he was 5 months old, he started 2 days a week and then increased slowly until starting 5 days a week when he was 3 years old. I think that it has been good for him; I am a scientist and I really lovemy job and don’t want to give it up (I would go mental). B jokes about becoming a house husband or stay at home dad, but I know that it wouldn’t work either (he would spend more time surfing than cleaning). Finding childcare is hard, especially in the inner west (where I work) or in the eastern suburbs (where we live). I have our name down in 7 different childcare centres with the hope that one of them will offer me a spot by the end of the year. It is not cheap either; it is more than $100 per day of which you get 50% back from the government up to a maximum of some $7,500 (childcare rebate). How can a working mother plan her return to work with no guarantee of having childcare? We have been talking about it in our Women in Science group but cannot come up with a solution.

On the second day of big rain today it was activities day with G, we downloaded some join-the-dots from Lego, a Spiderman and a great Darth Vader paper figurine... G did the join the dots, B started the Spiderman but then realised that we needed some thicker paper and I did the Darth Vader... team effort!
