MEDITATION – MEDITACIÓN

R relaxes by sleeping in weird positions -
R se relaja durmiendo todo retorcido
[ENGLISH] Over the last 6 weeks I have been doing a meditation course. The instructor has been taking us through different meditation techniques. She said that some techniques work better for some people so she would teach us a range and then we can practise those that are better for us.

I like counting, I have spent my life counting stuff, cars on my way to work, tiles in the bathroom, steps when I walk on the beach and breaths when I go for a run. My father does it too, and no, he did not teach me so it must be genetic. My mother was quite amused when she found out that I was a “counter” like dad. It turns out that counting is meditating, you empty your brain and go into relaxation, you can achieve deep relaxation by counting. It was the first technique that we learnt and the one that has worked the best with me.

I am a scientist. I can understand the reasons behind relaxation through counting, you sort of empty your brain. I can understand how you undertake relaxation techniques that “travel through your body”, it is about awareness, focusing in what you are feeling through that part of the body. My problems start when meditators speak like if it was some kind of religion. My instructor even said that science has proven that we can change our environment with our attitude; she insinuated that we can change the climate. I cringe; this is the same people that would be outraged if their children were taught creationism in school! (creationism, by the way, is absolutely ridiculous!) Don’t they realise that what they are saying is as wrong? We can change our attitude and we can modify other people’s attitudes to us but we cannot change our physical environment!

While I utterly enjoyed the meditation, I felt quite uncomfortable with some of the stuff what was said in the classes. Even more uncomfortable when the instructor was claiming that science had proven one thing or the other. Well, if it hasn’t been peer-reviewed by reputable peers, it is not science. And using Google and reading blogs is not scientific research.

Relaxing at the beach - Relax en la playa

A mí me gusta contar.

8.5 months of Bell's Palsy (Paralisis de Bell)

Picture showing how I can close my eyes
I can close my eyes! - Puedo cerrar los ojos!
[ENGLISH] I developed Bell’s Palsy on the 12 of April 2013; at the time I was overseas at a conference and it was very scary. I was also 26 weeks pregnant with my second child so doctors decided not to give me any medicines. I was told that it could take weeks or months to heal. As weeks passed, it became obvious that it was going to be months. This blog tells the story of my Bell's Palsy, here is the first post, you can find the others using the tags.

A new year has started and 8.5 months have passed. I have now recovered some mobility and can talk pretty well. It get worse when I am tired and I definitely feel quite self-conscious when I am with someone that has not seen me in a while and I feel (or imagine) that they are analysing what is going on with my face… when the analysis is real, it is normally followed by an awkward comment such as “You can hardly tell anything about Bell’s Palsy anymore…” And yes, if I am not talking or moving is not too bad… but as soon as I talk or smile it becomes obvious. I do miss my smile greatly and I don’t know if I should hope that I will get it back one day. The video and photos in this post show the asymmetry of my face and how my left eye closes involuntarily at times and the corner or my mouth pulls up when I close my eye. These involuntary movements are synkinesis.

My left eye is now smaller than my right eye.
But now it closes all the time
Pero ahora se cierra demasiado
I went to see a neurologist when in Spain and they did an electromyogram; they confirmed that it had been a severe bout of BP and that, at that time, 7 months later, I had less than 5% recovery. They told me that, more likely than not, I was going to have sequels, it was never going to heal completely. On the upside, they told me that I was still recovering and that hopefully recovery would continue for a while. I said one more year and they said probably less than that. Let’s see, I hope that I can prove them wrong and keep on recovering for as long as needed.

I also found an academic at the University of Sydney whose line of research specialises in recovery from facial paralysis. I went to see her a few weeks ago and she gave me some exercises to try to correct/minimise the synkinesis that I have developed. Here it is what I am supposed to do in front of a mirror a few times every day: (1) small smiles trying not to close the affected (left) eye; (2) pout slowly without closing the eye; and, (3) close both eyes softly without pulling up the left corner of my mouth. The hardest one is pouting without closing my eye. She also confirmed what I suspected: Yoga and Meditation are great for nerve recovery!

It feels a bit funny gesticulating in front of a mirror, I try to do them as much as I can but I am often in a rush to finish in the bathroom because G or R are calling for me… and remember that I have just given birth to my second child so pelvic floor exercises are also necessary! It is a bit of a whinge but finding the time for all these (boring) exercises is not easy.

Welcome 2014 – Bienvenido 2014

Family photo in Manly
[ENGLISH] I have been full-time mothering, this is why I have been away. Lots of work before going on holidays and then lots of things to do with the kids.

I am happy to see 2013 go. 2013 has been hard, really hard. I have seen people very close to me battle with depression and not always win. But I guess that the important thing is that they have been trying to get out and are in the path of recovery. My face went all wonky in April and has not recovered yet (I am yet to post the update on my Bell’s Palsy). And I also had a cancer scare with my mother. Lots of other ugly things happened to my good friends: one was in hospital with Purpura and another in hospital with cancer, another lost his mother, another did not get her permanent position, and my cousin divorced in a rather ugly way… and so on…

Two sons
My normal year ended in April as I have been unable to function normally afterwards. My face was painful and debilitating and as a result I took 1 month of sick leave. Thankfully my pregnancy went well and R was born on the 29th of July. And what a delight that has been! R is the sweetest and loveliest and cuddliest little boy. He is kind and gentle and has compensated everything else. What would have been a horrible year to forget has become a year to remember. Seeing my two kids grow and interact and play with their father has been what has kept me going this year.

I hope that 2014 is better, I want health and happiness and rest… and peace of mind… but I am starting to think that this is what growing up is about. Maybe this is what grown-ups were warning me when I wanted to grow up faster.

Happy new year to every one! May 2014 be great for all of us <3 <3 <3

G on his bike
[ESPAÑOL] He estado ocupada.

Back to "normal" - De vuelta a la "normalidad"

R + G
[ENGLISH] Well, R is now 4 months old and life seems to be going back to normal. I am now back to work two days a week… those two days are somehow flexible and imply a lot of work. Catching up has been insane but 1 month later I feel like I am starting to be up to date in almost everything. I am trying to take it easy and stick to my two days but it is hard when everyone around you works 5 days.

R and G are wonderful, G has been the best boy in the world lately, with really nice behaviour and manners… still a 4.5 years old boy though. A lot of fun. R has been going through the dreaded “4 month sleepregression” or the 4th leap of the Wonder Weeks, also known as the leap of week 19. His sleep has been shocking, with some nights waking up every couple of hours but I think that it is slowly going back to his normal sleep-through-the-night being. I have my fingers, my toes and my ears crossed! He is a happy little bubba otherwise, smiley and content. I truly am a lucky woman.

My face is still Picassian, left eye a lot smaller
My face did not get the memo about going back to normal and it is still quite Picassian. It is almost unnoticeable when I am not moving my face but as soon as I smile, chew, or move, then it is obvious that there is a significant lack of symmetry. I will do a Bell’s Palsy post on the 8 month mark.

I am cooking with the Thermomix like crazy and I must say that I am really enjoying it. I made Banana Bread following a lovely recipefrom Retro Mummy, and, yogurt sponge cake, and beef stew following recipes from official Thermomix books. I enjoy cooking with it as, for now, it really feels like I am experimenting. But what I enjoy the most is having no pots to wash afterwards.

Best Banana Bread I have made - El mejor Pan de Plátano
