Rias + Gaustralia

[ENGLISH] It has stopped raining!!! It looked like a lot of rain and it was indeed a lot of rain. It is not very Gaustralia, in Galicia it would have kept raining softly for, perhaps, months. Here it was pouring down rain for 11 days. But to continue with the Gaustralian theme, today I want to speak about the Galician Rias, which are some of the most famous landscape features in Galicia. Rias are drowned river valleys, i.e. river valleys that were flooded during the Holocene transgression (sea level rise). Although they still have river input, the riverine influence is not as important as it is in typical estuaries. A ria or a drowned river valley has three parts: a marine dominated area, an estuarine central zone and river dominated area next to the river mouth. Famous Galician rias include Vigo, Arousa, Muros, Ferrol... And guess what? Sydney Harbour is a Ria! And the same goes for other famous drowned river valleys in Australia, Port Stephens, Port Hacking...  Maybe that explains why I feel so comfortable around the Ria of Sydney :)

[ESPAÑOL] Ha parado de llover!! Ya me parecía mucha lluvia y la verdad es que sí que fueun montón de agua. No demasiado Gaustralego (Gaustraliano?), en Galicia habría continuado lloviendo suavito durante, a lo mejor, meses. Aquí llovió a cántaros durante 11 días. Pero continuando con el tema de Gaustralia, hoy voy a hablar de las Rías Gallegas, ya que son de los paisajes gallegos más conocidos. Las rías son valles fluviales que fueron inundados por el mar durante la transgresión (elevación del nivel del mar) holocena. Aunque aun tienen ríos que desembocan en las rías, la influencia fluvial no es tanta como sería de esperar en un estuario típico. Las rías tienen tres partes bien diferenciadas una parte fundamentalmente marina cerca de la bocana, una estuarina o de mezcla en el centro y una dominada por los procesos fluviales en la desembocadura del río. Algunas de las más famosas rías gallegas son Vigo, Arousa, Muros, Ferrol…  Lo mejor de todo es que geológicamente, el puerto de Sidney es una ría! También son rías otros puertos cercanos como PortStephens o Port Hacking… A lo mejor es por eso que me siento tan bien por la Ríade Sydney :)

[ENGLISH] Today I am going out to a friend's birthday. No post, I just wanted to share a picture of  my 37 weeks belly.

Also mentioning that I keep on thinking whether I jinxed the weather when I mentioned Gaustralia... it hasn't stopped rainign in more than a week, that is a lot for Sydney!

[ESPAÑOL] Hoy salgo que es el cumpleaños de una amiga. No escribo, sólo comparto esta foto de mi barriga de 37 semanas.

También mencionar que a veces creo que al mencionar Gaustralia gafé el clima de aquí... no ha parado de llover en más de una semana, todo un hito para Sidney!

Australianity - Australianidad

[ENGLISH] Today I became Australian. I am really happy about that, as I really like it here. Mixed feelings however, as it makes my stay here look more permanent, not that this is bad, it is just too far away from my family. You can see in the photos how Bell’s Palsy makes me look like a Picassian creation.

It is often said that Galicians feel homesick, we have “morriña” and end up comparing anywhere in the world to “miña terra Galega” (literally, my Galician land). Someone shared in Facebook today an article from traveller.es explaining the concept of Galifornia, this is comparing California and Galicia, apparently it is everywhere (?) in Instagram and you can read the full article here (sorry, in Spanish only, but you can see the photos), it is pretty good... perhaps I should start the concept of Gaustralia :)

[ESPAÑOL] Hoy me han concedido la nacionalidad Australiana. Estoy muy contenta ya que me encanta vivir aquí. Al mismo tiempo también me asusta ya que, de alguna manera, hace que mi estancia aquí sea más permanente. Esto me encanta pero estoy muy lejos de mi  familia. Se ve en la foto como la Parálisis de Bell me hace parecer una creación Picassiana.

Se dice de los gallegos, que siempre tenemos “morriña” y acabamos comparando todo el mundo con “miña terra Galega”. Hoy he visto en Facebook que alguien ha compartido un artículo de traveller.es en el que se explica el concepto de Galifornia, comparación de California y Galicia. Según parece comenzó en Instagram, aquí podéis leer el artículo completo. Esta muy bien… igual debería comenzar el concepto de Gaustralia :)
